Karonga chief pleased with literacy project
Traditional Authority Mwirang’ombe of Karonga District has expressed excitement with Building Educational Foundations through Innovation and Technology (Befit) for improving basic literacy among primary school learners in the area.
He said this on Monday in Nyungwe Zone during an open day that Karonga District Council organised to show the programme’s impact.

“The programme has improved learners’ literacy and numeracy skills. I ask the council to extend the programme to all schools in the district because it aligns with education enabler of the country’s long-term development plan, Malawi 2063,” said Mwirang’ombe.
Nyungwe Zone primary education adviser Batamiwe Mwalwanda said the event provided them with an opportunity to engage local leaders, parents and other stakeholders to see the importance of community involvement in sustaining educational gains.
He said: “The event served as a platform to celebrate progress, share experiences and strengthen partnerships between schools and the wider community.
“The event also had a message centered on hope, empowerment and collective
responsibility to the children and we emphasised that education is a powerful tool that can open doors to a brighter future.”
Mwalwanda urged learners to take care of the tablets and their accessories to make learning more engaging and effective.
“I also advise parents and guardians to support children’s education and encourage learners to attend classes all the time,” he said.
Befit is a government-led initiative designed to boost foundational literacy and numeracy for learners from Standard One to Four.
